Steering The Rebel Fleet

When the team spoke with Crewed, Urban was about to head down to Queenstown for the shoot for the second season of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake, having also worked on the original series. Weston was overseas, and has a good amount of stamps in his passport, having worked on Netflix’s Marco Polo and Into the Rainbow (aka The Wonder).

“We tailor the workflow for each shoot because the cameras and editing software – and time zones – all require different solutions to make it work and be cost-effective,” Calveley explained. “It’s about being able to work across a range of budgets and deliver.”

Sometimes those budgets are pretty low. Rebel Fleet recently supplied gear for a self-funded short, Robyn Grace’s short A Woman’s Right to Shoes, which was crowdfunding late last year and shot in June.

Shortly after Calveley and Urban spoke to Crewed, they booked another job, on inbound feature Meg, to be directed by Jon Turteltaub (Cool Runnings) and featuring Jason Statham (The Transporter and Fast & Furious franchises) and Chinese megastar Fan Bingbing (Skiptrace, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Iron Man 3).

The Rebel Fleet will handle all DIT technical monitoring and camera support, Video Assist, playback and on-set monitoring, data backup, verification and delivery of editorial content.

It looks as though there’ll be plenty to celebrate by the time the company’s second birthday comes around.
